ProntoTreno, the new service that lets consumers enjoy all of the functionality of Trenitalia's web-site directly on their mobile phones, is quickly winning loyal users among rail travelers in Italy.

Promptu, based in Menlo Park, CA, creates multimodal talk-and-type mobile phone applications for consumers, carriers, handset providers, and travel and transportation companies.

The mobile application lets users view timetables, check train departure and arrival status, purchase tickets, and change reservations on the fly. The service is built on Promptu's powerful speech recognition technology so users can give commands by speaking into their phones.

"You simply speak your departure and destination cities, and the date and time of travel and within seconds you have complete and up-to-the-minute schedules and the ability to purchase tickets on your mobile handset" said Giuseppe Staffaroni, Promptu CEO.

Since its introduction in December 2009 the application has won thousands of unique users. That number is expected to increase dramatically in coming weeks as the rail operator launches a major marketing campaign and Promptu adds support for the latest devices from BlackBerry and Nokia and other manufacturers.

To access the ProntoTreno service, users must download the application onto their mobile phone. The download and the service are both completely free. Usage is subject to connection charges, which depend on the user's wireless service provider and subscription plan.

Promptu will be demonstrating ProntoTreno and other new multimodal mobile phone applications in Hall 2, booth number 2EZ1 at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona—February 16th through 19th.
